Computers, robots or algorithms are not artists?
The media and some art institutions try to sensationalize AI art
by de-emphasizing human agency in the creative process, and by presenting the AI “algorithms”
as artists. They disregard well-informed notions about the complexity of the relationship
between authorship and technology.
Computers, robots or algorithms are not artists because they do not embody human
cognitive capabilities, skills and—most importantly—human motivations for making art.
Namely, the poetic qualities of human-made artefacts are inherently
instrumentalizable as virtue signaling means to impress, stand out, assert oneself, and move
forward in sexual competition and social hierarchy.
